This portion of the website is dedicated to the Turnblad Family of Washington County, Minnesota.  The family's original North American homestead was located in New Scandia Township. Today the Township is incorporated as the municipality of Scandia.  At birth in 1850 Frank Turnblad was given the name Frans and was known in Älmeboda Parish, Kronoberg County as Frans Johansson Thor.  In 1869 Frank's father Johan Petersson Thor emigrated from Småland and took up residence in New Scandia.  A year later Frank and his mother Johanna Persdotter emigrated from their homeland as well.

In their new home Frans and his parents settled amongst other Swedes from the eastern part of Kronoberg County.  With the passage of time and incremental changes along the way, the family became part of the fabric of northern Washington County.  The family name went through a slow parallel metamorphosis.  Slowly it changed from Thor to Thörnblad to Törnblad.  For the English speaking community Törnblad was impossible to pronounce, so the final change to Turnblad occurred.

Below you will find links to a wealth of information ranging in format from a traditional book to interactive maps and an interactive descendant tree.  Follow any of the links and find yourself in ancestral Småland!
